Quick spell from my grandma that was passed onto her from her mum and however many generations…

Lost something?

Stick a pin in your sofa and it’ll return to you.

Why does this shit work? No clue, fam. But mum and grandma swear by it and I’ll be damned if it didn’t work for me today

This relates to a series of charms threatening a spirit to return something lost. One I’ve read consists of sticking pins into an apple to threaten the Devil to return what was lost. Another concerns stepping on a stone or leaving a stone under a pile of heavy objects until the object is returned. And sticking a pin into a chair is also common in folk charms. Pinning the Devil, it is called.

Fascinating. Do you have a source for this? I’d like to read more, if possible.

Yes, there is the book Trolldom which has a few interesting ones. The way it is used in Swedish folkcraft is called “Squeezing the Devil’s Balls”. One might set a heavy object upon two round stones when they need to find the missing object, and intone “Squeeze, squeeze the devil’s balls” (Sw: Kläm, kläm fänins pongan).

Another similar version to this found in the same book which is to place a cross under a table leg until the lost object is found.

St Anthony is associated with finding lost items. A simple prayer is to turn his image upside down, and say:

“St Anthony, St Anthony,
Please come down!
Something is lost
And must be found.”

When the object is found, his image is returned upright and in thanks the magician goes to feed the poor.

It’s a rather rude way of getting what one needs in a hurry, but it is effective!

is there a way to stop feeling hollow and filmy when trying to do witchy stuff? like, to actually be able to feel like there's something behind what you're doing?

I think the secret is to find something you really like and stay there for a while and study it. I felt silly and hollow when I started reading witchy book. I stood in my bedroom staring at an open Scott Cunningham book trying to call quarters and I felt completely foolish. So I quit doing that. I liked candle magic so I bought some candles and some oil and would anoint the candle and light it and stare at it. I would smell incense and feel the warmth of the flame. I’d grow plants and notice how they grow and change. What are the things you are draw to and how do you make them your own? I know for me, and I suspect others as well, that the “mysteries” in witchcraft are often only partially about the study, but also a out the notice and the forming of patters. You can study stuff all you want and know that rosemary is good for protection but also memory, but it you never touch rosemary or watch how it grows and stays green all winter, you might miss how it fits into the patterns. I know for me that a lot of my early witching was training my brain to see the world differently, more malleable. To see/feel/understand the pattern is to see where it can be altered.
I think it too me about 5 years to have a really solid foundation in the practice I had built. I’m sure it is different for others, especially if you are following an established tradition. But witchcraft is not given to you whole cloth. You have to work at it and experiment.
Maybe you can’t get into what you are currently doing. Don’t be afraid to walk away. You can always pick it up later. Follow what interests you. Maybe do a daily tarot or Oracle reading and use that as a reference through out the day to start to see patterns. Maybe you like doing witchcraft hopped up on coffee? Maybe you draw energy from dancing or singing or getting in a circle pit at a show or watching humans in a train station. How do you integrate the you that has moved through this world all your life into whatever witch you that you can imagine?

to me a sensory element makes it feel more “real” (which i feel like this post touches on but not explicitly?), especially if it’s something that produces energy, like candles produce radiant energy (heat and light), or if you rub a stone or crystal in your hands it’ll become warm. But beyond that, things like scents and textures. Singing can be a really powerful sensation but it can feel very foolish if you’re just doing it alone, so consider singing along with a track you already have.

Writing a verse/your own spell might be worth a shot, and if you feel silly saying it aloud you can say it in your mind. don’t feel married to saying things the way you read them in books or online; I can’t say “mote,” so I say “so it shall be” instead.

IF you know anyone IRL who practices, doing something with another person can really shoot the energy level way up, but make sure it’s someone you really trust.

And lastly…I guess I’d say…don’t be afraid to play pretend a bit?

but! my paradigm is kinda vague and weird so stuff may or may not work for me like it works for other people. ymmv.

Yes! Sensory! That’s the word my brain couldn’t think of! I think a lot of witchcraft books either focus on the stuff in your head like intent and meditation or they focus on the method of doing the thing (putting stuff in a jar or a bag or lighting the candle) and don’t look too much about the connection between the two and that’s a thing that is really personal and varies from human body to body. The closest you get is when they talk about grounding or charging and they never really explain it that way.

We all relate to our inner self to the outer world in different ways, in ways that frame our inner and outer worlds. So we all start from a different spot that is uniquely our own. This starts to get into the “Know Thyself” piece of writing that I have been kicking around. How does our Inside relate to the outside. Sensory is a one way of exploring that.

"What was a god? A focus of belief. If people believed, a god began to grow. Feebly at first, but if the swamp taught anything, it taught patience. Anything could be the focus of a god. A handful of feathers with a red ribbon around them, a hat and coat on a couple of sticks…anything. Because when all people had was practically nothing, then anything could be almost everything."

Do you have any links/info on music for rituals?

Not really, it tends to be a matter of personal preference and aesthetic. I can tell you what I prefer using but I dunno how useful you’ll personally find it. Current faves:
